a VERY short abstract of a journal i was reading for my sociology elective:

"we create undue obstacles and misdirect efforts if we deny the important role of merit in contemporary allocation processes and imagine that ascriptive biases are fundamental causes of differential success and the intergenerational transmission of privilege. Our research shows that merit shows that merit generally trumps the advantages and disadvantages of birth."

do you see that ray of light after the tunnel now? i feel so motivated to work harder now! (albeit a rather late realization)

and as a after-thought, i just hadta say this: to those who cant deal with the little adversities in life and ceaselessly bemoan over their pathetic situation. Take that, suckerrrrs!!!!!!

i was back scooping at ben&jerrys for 2 days and damn it was fun!

other than the helluva biatch of a customer (/flings snort at her) which me and sining met, it was like the good ole days with kath :D its good to see everyone (well, almost) like evelyn, sining, sakinah, bev, ginni and alicia!

ps: sorry guys no photos, coz i absentmindedly left my cam at home :/

anyways, CNY's approaching so may everyone HUAT AR HUAT in this year of the nasty rodent!!!

i have a splitting headache, it makes me wanna turn into an ulcer and pour salt on myself.

very sadistic i know, but like the chinese say "fight poison with poison".

i was doing research for my GMS module and came across some fun facts! did you know....

1. two-thirds of the world's execution occur in China? (creeeeeepy..)

2. Russia has almost twice as many judges and magistrates as the United States. Meanwhile, the United States has 8 times as much crime. (democracy haha!)

3. Venezuela is one of the happiest and most murderous places in the world (strange people)

4. In the Maldives, there are more than 2 jails for every 1000 people. (and i thought it was a fantastic destination for a beach holiday hur hur)

anyways, STRESS AR STRESS. bye!

the skies of winter - delicate and barren

Thursday, January 17, 2008
as usual, hong kong was fantastic - its a beautiful urban city, springing with opportunities and dynamism. the aloofness of this cosmopolitan city is somewhat very seductive, yet at the same time mired in some sense of deterioration, which cant really be ascertained. anyways, enough of emo talk - peektures!

krispy kremes! it tastes even better when its located so near popo's home (yay!) and yes i am THAT greedy, ate 3 donuts plus a mocha at a go. hoho oh yes, their mocha drink is uber nice coz it comes with a happy vanilla float and kopi gao gao - i likeeee.

ze orgasmic desert that trumps everything.
at only hkd28 bucks you can buy a bowl of long-lasting happiness, how cool is that?!

now you see it, now you don't. its SO GOOD.
btw the mascot of this desert shop is super cute too, looks alot like the badzbadtzmaru (is that the correct spelling?) character which reminds me of siyou - coz she's the black-loving morose kiddo with that menacing bite like him haha

bad papa bad, totally engrossed with his car mag when we were waiting for our desert.
cars to papa is like shoes/bags to siyu.

my cool papa with his nice brook brothers shirt! /i give many stamps of approval
(please ignore my fat face)

ooo us in his new convertible hohoho.
its pretty luxurious compared to the prev one with falling roof haha

me attempting a Balenciaga AW07 look with hair all tucked in - someone said i looked very old with pseudo short hair :(

beautiful cascading crystal display for x'mas decorations
i cant rave enough about how willing these hk peepos are to spend on visuals in shopping malls. seriously, singapore's retail pales sorely in contrast. i was even more surprised to find out that all the connecting walkways between the many shopping malls in hk are all private initiatives between the property owners of the malls. wow.

the view from our new house!!

wierdass restaurant name at the new shopping mall, The Element. (its such a cool mall they should have just named it THA BOMB). anyways, when i saw the restaurant i immediately burst out laughing and stopped in my tracks to take a picture coz' i know sijing would definitely react the same way but ohwells, guess i was wrong.

restaurant at Exchange Square - one of my favourite in hk in terms of ambience, food (salivates profusely), entertainment, decor and price too! haha
Zen at pacific place was BAD (thats why no pictures haha). serious misalignment between their positioning as mid-high class and the service rendered (very unprofessional). THUMBS DOWN.

my ring almost flew away from sticking my fingers outta the car to take this photo :S goodbye hk! see you again 6 months later (hopefully)

siyou, on her overgrown hair:

"im a hot bed of grossness"
HAHAHA!! damn funny

siying on siyou's driving:

"er jie, you can be a taxi driver already"
siyou, i have to agree with yingying, you weli fierce

lastly, siying says she is uber angsty because of the massive amount of mor (hair) on her head. yes, i feel your pain!!

i have a iconoclast for a tutor for my retail management class, not in a bad way. plus, hes quite the quintessential Briton, the dry, sarcastic wit - there is always something very alluring about the understated elegance of the Brits, other than Mulberry bags (ooo!) , Ted Baker (overpriced), Matthew Williamson (wah his designs, i lust), Stella McCartney (fabulous shoes and clutches), Jonathan Ryers (nosebleed profusely), and the list goes on.

and yes sorry i digressed.

anyways, he did away with the 830 class (in a way, he changed it to 930) and i was euphoric!! YAYNESS. oh but on a sidenote, he reminds me a little of Mad-Eye Moody in Harry Potter. /shudders.

so far school's been alright, despite being quite busy coz' of FYP and crapload of things on my agenda (still, i have no idea why. strange)

ps: i know this is kinda late but... happy 2008 everyone! :D

it seems like a truce / ceasefire is THE solution to go for most conflicts. which is because of a lack of desire on either one or both sides to compromise to reach a win-win situation. most often than not, because of dreadfully bigoted self-interests, it becomes a zero-sum game. the concept is quite similar to the prisoner's dilemma.

lousiest is the escapist's way of conflict resolution - to wall oneself up and take flight instead of finding feasible solutions. yes, the Y chromosomes in me speak.

ps: if giving an acrimonious replies with a scowl that parallels that of a misanthropist is most characteristic of you, then pardon me for aggravating your regular moods of petulance.

finally. penning all these down is so cathartic. Dear Lord, as i commit these tiresome family matters and vile emotions into your hands, i pray that You will lead us to a solution that most pleases you. Amen.
