the asian work culture

as an individual brought up an in relatively bi-cultural manner throughout my entire life, the asian work culture baffles me alot, in many instances.

tell me, what is deference to a singaporean?

sure, we are so competent when it comes to rattling off the "right" definitions, doing the "right" things, acting the "right" way. yet, do we really know what that means?

its like a circus act really, all so when senior management comes down for a simple visit. an affront to the senior management's intellect and direct lampoon of what many of us think is deference - the RSM runs helter skelter, with such woe in her eyes, all over the shop floor snapping at everyone (the lowest life form), nit-picking, curtly ordering us around (i refuse to acknowledge it as legitimate delegation of work). yes, i am only a pathetic promoter, but aren't all humans made of a same mold, like the Bible says?

strange, she only starts to kan chiong when authority is near - what a farce.

ian (my prof) was so damn right when he said the work culture in singapore is bloody stifling when intrusive supervision is the norm.

deference is not fear, its respect. and may i add, its earned, not coerced or conditioned.

ps: unfortunately, i cannot put down the name of the organisation which im part-timing at, in case i get involved in a lawsuit. or more seriously, a catfight with this abominable female RSM. haha. /meow. shows cat claws.

but from the bottom of my heart, if i really get to work in this organisation (since ive applied for a position there), i sincerely wish one day when im at the management level, i get to change this. this feigned deference is really very irrational.

as usual, hong kong was fantastic - its a beautiful urban city, springing with opportunities and dynamism. the aloofness of this cosmopolitan city is somewhat very seductive, yet at the same time mired in some sense of deterioration, which cant really be ascertained. anyways, enough of emo talk - peektures!

krispy kremes! it tastes even better when its located so near popo's home (yay!) and yes i am THAT greedy, ate 3 donuts plus a mocha at a go. hoho oh yes, their mocha drink is uber nice coz it comes with a happy vanilla float and kopi gao gao - i likeeee.

at only hkd28 bucks you can buy a bowl of long-lasting happiness, how cool is that?!

it seems like a truce / ceasefire is THE solution to go for most conflicts. which is because of a lack of desire on either one or both sides to compromise to reach a win-win situation. most often than not, because of dreadfully bigoted self-interests, it becomes a zero-sum game. the concept is quite similar to the prisoner's dilemma.

it irks me ALOT when people have absolutely no insinuation of what is basic courtesy. and im not even talking the higher-order levels of courtesy (if there is a paradigm as such) like clearing the table after use, or blowing your nose in the washroom (ahem, Royalties call it lavatory).

im talking about "thank you-s". i think its VERY basic, and no matter how abominable a person is, if you borrow something from that person, a thank you should suffice. After all, no feelings are nor should be involved in this undertaking - its pretty much a transaction. Therefore, it is only congruous that since you gained from this transaction, the lender deserves some form of obvious requital.

and it would be presumptuous to assume that because "we are so familiar/close" therefore no need for such pleasantries. sure, to some extent that is true but since its classified as a pleasantry, why not remain steadfast in being "nice" to those closest to you instead of being nice to the many "others" who don't really matter. well, on the other hand, im not advocating one to be a total barbarian to everyone else.

besides, keeping all the words inside and the mouth shut gives you bad breath. HAHAHA

clubbing yesterday night was such a bad choice. it was really stifling and the crowd was terrible jam-packed. but hell, fantastic company (baobei, mund, issac and friends) redeemed the foul night-out. think lily and i were pretty tickled by the avalanche of expletives spewing outta edmund's mouth HAAAAHAHAA.

so im making an avowal to stay outta clubbing for awhile. it just struck me last night how most of the time im always going for the wrong reasons somehow - escapism, really. it used to be a subconscious tool of vengeance, punishment to a relationship that was a quagmire of hidden woes. now, its perhaps, another tool of escape from a world hard to deal in - through all that inebriated revelry (albeit fleeting).

sorry it sounds so bad, but post-drinking for me usually turns me awfully pensive. you know, in vino veritas. and i just havta pen it down to get it outta my system. haha

nevertheless, im truly thankful for the company last night. you all dunno how much it meant to me but with them, i feel very at ease and happy, truly happy.
